With the NFL season quickly approaching, all of the big moves in this NFL offseason have come and gone. However, one notable quarterback battle was settled on Monday when Baker Mayfield was named the starter for the Carolina Panthers.
After he was dealt to the Panthers by Cleveland, oddsmakers immediately shifted odds in the prop markets. Mayfield was listed as a -1200 favorite to be the starter at DraftKings, with Sam Darnold and Jaxson Dart lagging far behind. So while it was a given that Mayfield would probably be named the starter, the announcement does create intrigue for Carolina’s Week 1 matchup against the Browns.
As a result of this announcement, the 2022-23 Super Bowl odds have shifted slightly. Let’s take a look at the updated odds and projections for the Panthers.
NFL Super Bowl odds shift for Carolina Panthers
After Mayfield was traded, the Panthers were listed at around 125/1 to win the Super Bowl at most sportsbooks. With the news that he has been named the starter, those odds have shifted to 100/1 at FanDuel. However, since Mayfield was a considerable favorite to land the starting job, some sportsbooks haven’t adjusted their prices much. For example, you can still get Carolina at 130/1 to win Super Bowl LVII at DraftKings.
If you are bullish on Carolina’s chances, it would be best to shop around for the best number. The Panthers remains a serious longshot to take home the Lombardi Trophy, but Mayfield is an improvement over Sam Darnold. Even after the trade, oddsmakers are indicating that it would take a lot for Carolina to win the title.

Mayfield remains a longshot for NFL MVP
Unlike the Panthers’ title odds, Mayfield’s MVP outlook didn’t change much in the betting market. It is worth remembering that the Panthers’ quarterback is coming off shoulder surgery and will need to pick up the new offense in Carolina quickly. Oddsmakers have likely factored this into the price, as Mayfield is currently 80/1 to win the MVP award at DraftKings. This gives him the same odds as the same odds as Pittsburgh’s Mitch Trubisky, Chicago’s Justin Fields and Jameis Winston of the New Orleans Saints. The oddsmakers don’t expect a strong season from Mayfield in Carolina, and his MVP odds reflect that.
NFL Week 1 odds for Cleveland Browns vs Carolina Panthers
In an ironic turn of events, the Browns and Panthers will open the 2022 season against each other on September 11.
This Week 1 matchup should be exciting, as Mayfield will now face off against his former team in his first game in Carolina. The Panthers are currently 1-point favorites, with money line odds of -120 for the hosts available at DraftKings.
