One year after suffering a 41-33 defeat in Super Bowl 52 by the Philadelphia Eagles, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots were projected by Vegas to win 11 games and they did exactly that. The 2018 season for New England ended up being a one to remember. They once again captured the AFC East division crown and finished 11-5. We can’t forget their run to their sixth Super Bowl Championship, can we? It was said that they weren’t going to get anywhere, that they would lose against Los Angeles, or they would lose in Kansas City. They proved the doubters wrong once again, as they got the job done in the AFC Championship against the Chiefs, and proceeded to their third consecutive Super Bowl. Everybody that joined on the New England Patriots betting crew this season was extremely happy. Tom Brady and company got the job done in Atlanta in Super Bowl 53 with a 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Ring number six for “Tom Terrific”.
It doesn’t look like Brady is done either, as he put up solid numbers in 2018 finishing with 4,355 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions for a QB rating of 97.7. It looks like the Patriots have found a diamond in the backfield to go along with James White, as rookie Sony Michel burst on the scene with 209 carries for 931 yards and six touchdowns. White was useful as ever this season adding 94 carries for 425 yards and five scores, while also pitching in 87 catches for 751 yards and seven touchdowns. Julian Edelman missed the first four games due to suspension than came out with a vengeance recording 74 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns. Edelman was a key factor in the Patriots run to the Super Bowl Championship along with picking up the Super Bowl MVP honor. New England made some money this year in a big way. Here’s a look at the New England Patriots 2018 season and how they did against the spread and the over/under.
Patriots against the Spread
The New England Patriots finished the season 9-7 ATS. The Patriots went 6-2 at home ATS and were perfect during their playoff run with a perfect 3-0 ATS record against three high scoring offenses in the Chargers, Chiefs, and Rams. The Patriots struggled ATS on the road going 3-5 away from Foxborough against the spread.
In their five road games, they weren’t able to cover the Patriots lost each of them which were ultimately their five losses on the season. All five losses came against teams that failed to make the playoffs. Those losses were on the road in Jacksonville, Detroit, Tennessee, Miami, and Pittsburgh. That constitutes that if New England failed to cover in road games this season it resulted in a loss.
In their two home games, they failed to cover they came within a point and a point and a half of covering the spread in every home game this season. Those game were against Kansas City when New England won by three in a game the spread was three and a half. The other came in their week 16 game against Buffalo when the Patriots won by 12 in a game the spread was 13.5.
Patriots Over/Under
The Patriots over-under in 2018 was 5-11, which is down from 2017 when New England had an over-under of 7-9. In 2016 the over-under was an outstanding 13-3. This season wasn’t highly expected but it wasn’t out of the question either. The defense for New England looked very shaky for much of the season, as they gave up 148 points through the first six games going 4-2 overall and had an over-under of 3-3. It was definitely a season to forget in regards to the over-under for New England. Luckily for them, it didn’t determine their destiny as they went 2-1 in the over-under in the postseason with the under coming in their 13-3 victory over the Rams in the Super Bowl.
