Mets vs Nationals Pickswise Expert Predictions
Griffin Canning was a 2nd-round pick in the 2017 draft out of UCLA, and expectations were high for the right-hander once he reached the big leagues with the Los Angeles Angels. Canning never fully panned out in Anaheim, but he has recently entered the Mets’ pitching lab after signing with New York in free agency this offseason. The early returns have been strong, with Canning earning a 3.12 ERA through his first 5 starts spanning a combined 26 innings. His underlying peripheral numbers are strong with a 3.30 FIP and 3.74 SIERA while earning the highest CSW% since his rookie season. Canning has allowed a decent amount of hard contact and Washington is far better offensively when in their home park, but I think the Mets have a sizable edge in the starting pitching matchup on Monday.
Trevor Williams is a pitcher I am simply not a fan of betting on. The veteran right-hander had a very poor 2023 season, posting a 5.55 ERA across 144.1 innings with similarly poor underlying metrics, but he did perform better in a limited sample during 2024. Williams only tossed 66.2 innings across 13 starts last season for Washington, surpassing 5 innings of work just 4 times in that sample. He has yet to record more than 15 outs in any of his first 5 starts this season, and his inability to work deep into games leaves the Washington bullpen exposed for multiple innings, and that is a unit ranking in the bottom 5 in both ERA and FIP this season. I like New York to win Monday’s matchup with their divisional opponent.
