Chicago Cubs vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 09/24/24
Cubs vs Phillies Pickswise Expert Predictions
The Philadelphia Phillies clinched their 1st NL East division title since 2011 last night and have 2 more games at home against the Chicago Cubs before finishing the regular season this weekend against the Nationals. My take is that it was a late night in Philly last night and we may see a few starters out of the lineup ahead of tonight’s first pitch. As far as pitching is concerned, Tanner Banks will serve as an opener for the Phillies before they turn things over to a bulk reliever, likely Kolby Allard or Taijuan Walker.
I don’t have a great deal of faith in either Allard or Walker at the moment, for very different reasons. Allard has only appeared in 6 games for the Phillies this season and owns a 4.30 ERA, while Walker is posting a 6.91 ERA across 82.0 innings on the year. Even since moving Walker to the pen, there has been little improvement and he allowed 8 earned runs and 4 home runs in 3.1 innings of relief just 5 days ago. The Cubs should have a significant pitching advantage tonight when left-hander Justin Steele toes the rubber. Steele owns a 3.03 ERA across 23 starts and is ranks in the 83rd percentile or better in xERA, xBA, average exit velocity, barrel rate, and hard-hit rate. Steele has been particularly strong since the beginning of August, boasting a 1.84 ERA over his last 6 starts. With that said, I’ll back the Cubs to even the series at Citizens Bank Park.
