Syracuse Orange vs Pittsburgh Panthers Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 10/24/24

As we continue to roll through 2024, the year of football every day, devil may care, our Thursday action takes us to our Syracuse Orange vs Pitt Panthers prediction. These are 2 good teams, albeit flawed teams. The Panthers are a perfect 6-0 behind freshmen QB Eli Holstien, who has thrived under the new-look ariel attack offense of the Panthers. On the other side, the visiting Orange are 5-1 and their only blemish is a strange home loss to Stanford. Kyle McCord is putting up video-game numbers for ‘Cuse, and if it had even a hint of a defense this team could play with just about anyone. For me, I am not a believer in this Pitt team — not at all. So I am happy to take the points with the Orange in this one. My Syracuse vs Pitt pick is Syracuse +6.

We have people out there making mock playoff brackets that include Pitt right now, and we need to settle down with that stuff and tone down the silliness. Sure, Pitt is undefeated, but with Syracuse, SMU, Clemson, Louisville and BC as the remaining schedule, it is crazy talk to think the Panthers will stay that way. In fact, their 2 conference wins are against Cal and UNC — the 2 teams tied for last place in the ACC — so let’s maybe not put them in the bracket just yet. The Pitt offense has been a revelation, though, and it makes them relevant. Indeed, they should be a live contender in all of those remaining games. But their defense is still a mess, with only a couple of experienced starters in the mix. Their passing defense is outside the top 100, and they have mostly played run-heavy teams (Cal, Cincinnati, West Virginia). I have to think McCord will carve them up. On the other side of the ball, Syracuse can’t stop anyone, either, so the point total is rightly set above 60. This one is probably coming down to turnovers in the end, but give me the experienced McCord against an awful pass defense.
