South Carolina Win(+105)

The South Carolina Gamecocks (3-3) and the Oklahoma Sooners (4-2) face off for the first time ever this weekend in Norman. Both teams come into this matchup following disappointing losses of varying degrees. The Gamecocks fought all the way until the end in Tuscaloosa last week, losing to the Tide 27-25 ultimately because of a missed 2-point conversion and failing to get into field goal range after a rare onside kick recovery. Meanwhile, the Sooners grabbed an early 3-0 lead against arch-rival Texas before allowing 34 unanswered points. They were outgained 406-237 while averaging just 2.3 yards per carry and 4.9 yards per pass.

This is a difficult travel spot for the Gamecocks, but they are still the preferred side in this matchup. Neither offense is particularly inspiring, but South Carolina has been much better than Oklahoma on a down-to-down basis since Week 3. Not to mention, the Gamecocks are the much healthier team. They are 61st in offensive PPA with a top 50 explosive rate in the last 5 weeks, while the Sooners rank 133rd and 104th, respectively. The strength of South Carolina’s offense is its rushing attack, which could meet some resistance against an Oklahoma rush defense that has been very strong since the middle of September. However, Oklahoma’s offensive inefficiencies could lead to short drives and an increased amount of punts, forcing the Sooner defense to be on the field longer than usual – potentially making it less and less effective as the game goes on against strong runners like LaNorris Sellers and Raheim Sanders.

Offensively, the Sooners are 92nd in havoc allowed and 130th in line yards since Week 3 (excluding garbage time), which does not bode well for the offense against a South Carolina defense that averages 3.17 sacks and 7.33 tackles for loss per game – both top 15 marks nationally. Expect a good bit of havoc to be generated by South Carolina’s front 7 in this matchup, and for the offense to do just enough to pull out the difficult win on the road against a new conference foe.
