Ole Miss Rebels vs South Carolina Gamecocks Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 10/05/24

Ole Miss’ home loss to Kentucky in Week 5 was one of the most eye-popping results of the week. While the Rebels out-gained the Wildcats, they converted only 1 of 10 3rd downs and averaged just 3.2 yards per carry. They also lost the time of possession battle handedly, as the Wildcats had the ball almost double the amount of time as the Rebels. With the loss, each of Ole Miss’ games mean that much more. Two losses with Ole Miss’ strength of schedule could leave the Rebels on the outside looking in when the College Football Playoff field is announced. 

The South Carolina Gamecocks are off a bye as a home underdog in what will be another intense environment at Williams Brice Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks should have plenty of confidence for this matchup considering they beat Kentucky in Lexington pretty handily and followed it up with a very close game at home against LSU as the College GameDay host – a game they really should have won. In this particular matchup, South Carolina’s defensive line figures to shine against an Ole Miss offensive line that struggled last week when it finally played against an opponent of equal class. Per PFF, Jaxson Dart faced pressure on 14 of his 36 dropbacks. He was sacked 4 times and had to scramble another 4 times. That should be music to the Gamecocks’ ears, as they are top 20 in defensive PPA and havoc generated with the 3rd-best pass rush in the country according to PFF’s pass rush grade. For what it’s worth, Ole Miss has not fared particularly well ATS as a favorite off a SU loss in Lane Kiffin’s tenure, and this isn’t the best spot for the Rebels given the fact that they’re playing a team off its bye week with a trip to LSU on deck next week. Look for the Gamecocks to feed off a charged-up crowd in Columbia and for the Gamecocks to at least keep this close if not win outright.
