Oklahoma Sooners vs Auburn Tigers Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 09/28/24

The Oklahoma Sooners were welcomed to the SEC last week by top-ranked Tennessee. The Sooners came up short on their home field 25-15. Oklahoma will look to get win number one in the new conference this week as they travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers. The main story for the Sooners in last week’s game was the change at quarterback. Jackson Arnold confirmed the concerns of the doubters, only throwing for 54 yards and putting up only 3 points on the board for the Sooners on their home field. Arnold’s struggles to throw the deep ball with accuracy that we saw in the Houston game were also prevalent against Tennessee. Arnold ended up getting pulled late in the game for freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. Hawkins provided the Sooners with a spark, throwing for 132 yards and a touchdown. Hawkins also earned the respect of his teammates by diving over the top of a defender in the final minutes towards the endzone despite the game being all but over. All signs point towards Hawkins starting this Saturday, which could bring new life to the Sooner’s offense.

The Auburn Tigers are also coming off a disappointing loss. They fell short 24-14 at home against Arkansas. This game was a 7-7 stalemate until late in the third quarter. Auburn believed that this was a winnable game but ended up falling behind late and coming up short. Payton Thorne was able to control the turnovers in this game, only throwing one interception. The senior quarterback does have 5 interceptions already in the young season. This is a big concern heading into the matchup against the Sooners. Oklahoma’s defense, which is led by defensive guru Brent Venables, is one of the nation’s best. They are filled with NFL talent and speed all over the field. I believe Oklahoma will get their first SEC win with a dominant defensive performance.
