Following a near meltdown in Boulder, the Kansas State Wildcats (5-1) will hit the road again this week when they travel to Morgantown to play the West Virginia Mountaineers (3-3). The Wildcats held a 21-7 lead over Colorado midway through the 3rd quarter last week, but the Buffs stormed back in the final period and took the lead for a short period of time before Kansas State rattled off 2 explosive plays immediately following Colorado’s touchdown to reclaim the lead and take the victory. Meanwhile, West Virginia struggled to find momentum at home against Iowa State. The Mountaineers trailed 14-10 at halftime and scored just 6 points on 4 possessions in the 2nd half. Half of those 2nd half possessions ended with Garrett Greene interceptions, 1 of which was in the green zone when trailing by just 4 points. 

This is a tough spot for the Wildcats, as they travel from Boulder to Morgantown in back-to-back weeks to face a Mountaineer squad that played at home in Week 7. Not that the 5-1 Kansas State Wildcats would be looking past this game, but they have their in-state rivalry matchup against Kansas next week, as well — all while vying for a top 2 spot in the conference. Don’t let West Virginia’s record fool you, though. The Mountaineers are also in the mix for a Big 12 Championship berth with a 2-1 conference record. Given the magnitude of this matchup in the conference title race, I expect this to be a physical and close game throughout. Both teams are likely to continue relying heavily on the run, which should keep the clock moving and decrease the number of possessions in this game. Furthermore, pace of play should be below the national average in this contest, as both teams are outside the top 65 in seconds per play. Both offenses average less than 3.5 touchdowns per game against FBS opponents, and these defenses rank in the top 35 at preventing scoring opportunities in non-garbage time since Week 3.
