Both teams were also expected to finish at the bottom of the Big 12, and both are overachieving. This is a surprise spot in many ways, and for ASU this is an especially tough spot playing at noon ET all the way across the country. The Bearcats are a balanced team, doing everything well enough but nothing outstanding. Their offense is 2-dimensional, their defense is middle of the road and they are built to be well-rounded. They have a QB they feel like they can trust, but their overall roster talent is thin. I think they are more likely to fade than to flourish down the stretch. Arizona State, on the other hand, has a couple of real strengths — even if unexpectedly so. Stealing the spotlight right now is blue-collar running back Cameron Skattebo, who piled up 158 yards and 2 scores against a good Utah defense last week, and he did it when everyone in the country knew he was about to get the ball. The dude is allergic to getting tackled. But the real strength of this team is its rush defense. Teams flat out struggle to run the ball against the Sun Devils, which makes them 1-dimensional too often. Last week that forced Utah’s Cam Rising into 3 interceptions. I think this defense is legitimate and can carry them; it should at least be able to keep them in a game. I think it is really tough to play a cross-country game at noon, but I still think the Sun Devils can keep this game close. I’ll take the points.
